What’s happening in the first grade?

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a relaxing break.  We are back into full swing here in the classroom.  In social studies we will continue to learn about maps.  The first graders will be learning about the 7 continents.  I am attaching a map in this packet so that they can practice identifying each continent.  This is a skill that is required in first grade and they will be tested over this next week.   For the test students will cut out the name of each continent and glue it into the correct place.  We will be making a salt, flour dough map of the 7 continents in class this week.

We are reading two stories about Fox and Bear this week as we discuss the importance of friends.  The first graders will be learning how to write a letter and are going to write letters to their friends in class.  They will also be writing a letter to a family member outside of school.  Please have them select someone they would like to send a letter to and have them bring in that address no later than Wednesday!  I will mail the letters from school on Friday.  If your child has not brought in the address I will send it home for you to mail.

In religion we will be discussing ways that Jesus is our Shepherd, listen to stories of Jesus in the temple and find Jerusalem on a map.  In math we’ll wrap up our study of graphs and will have our test on Thursday.  The homework this week will be a good review for the test.  We will also be using skittles to create a tally chart and bar graph.
